What happens when a groundbreaking discovery beyond our world instantly turns your life upside down? That is the driving premise behind The Outer Threat, an indie sci-fi thriller written and directed by Toronto-based filmmaker William Woods (The Kid Detective, Castle in the Ground).

The film follows two astrophysicists, Daniel (Mark O'Brien) and Michelle (Constance Wu), whose sudden detection of potential extraterrestrial intelligence triggers a massive power grid failure and forces their family on a high-stakes, paranoid run across the countryside.

Blending high-concept cosmic intrigue with grounded family dynamics and survival tension, the thriller explores how quickly scientific passion can collide with human fear and government secrecy. Adding crucial weight to the family's journey is character actor extraordinaire William Fichtner, who delivers a memorable second-half appearance as a guarded diner owner caught in the ripples of an unfolding societal collapse.

I had the opportunity to speak with director William Woods to talk about stepping behind the camera for his feature directorial debut, crafting a science-forward thriller, and working alongside a stellar cast that includes William Fichtner, who also joins us to discuss bringing his scene-stealing role to life.
