Room on DVD & Blu Ray: Interview with Jacob Tremblay

Room is one of those movies that after having seen it, will stay with you for a very long time. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name written by Emma Donoghue, Room has been beautifully translated for the big screen by director Lenny Abrahamson and stars Brie Larson (who just won a Best Actress Oscar for her powerful performance) and up and coming young actor Jacob Tremblay.

Room is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray and really should not be missed.

The story centers around Jack (Jacob Tremblay), a spirited 5-year-old who is looked after by his loving and devoted Ma (Brie Larson). Like any good mother, Ma dedicates herself to keeping Jack happy and safe, nurturing him with warmth and love and doing typical things like playing games and telling stories. Their life, however, is anything but typical—they are trapped—confined to a windowless, 10-by-10-foot space, which Ma has euphemistically named “Room.” Ma has created a whole universe for Jack within Room, and she will stop at nothing to ensure that, even in this treacherous environment, Jack is able to live a complete and fulfilling life. But as Jack’s curiosity about their situation grows, and Ma’s resilience reaches its breaking point, they enact a risky plan to escape, ultimately bringing them face-to-face with what may turn out to be the scariest thing yet: the real world.

Jacob Tremblay born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia is a marvel in this role. He began acting at the age of five and made his film debut as Blue Winslow in The Smurfs 2 (2013). His breakout performance came for starring as Jack Newsome in Room, for which he received critical acclaim and won the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer and was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role.
Jacob was seven years old when he shot the film and it is truly beyond comprehension that he was not only able to play Jack with such believable conviction but that he was actually able to get through it.

Although he did not get nominated for an Academy Award the little scene stealer has spent this past Oscar season working the red carpets and was given the opportunity to be a presenter at the ceremony.
His co-star, Best Actress Oscar winner Brie Larson knows that her performance would never have been as powerful without Jacob by her side. She has repeatedly thanked him in every interview and speech she has given when discussing Room.

It’s no wonder that we will be seeing quite a lot of young Jacob. Coming up he has a supporting role in the psychological thriller Shut In, co-starring Naomi Watts and Oliver Platt. He will star in the horror film Before I Wake, with Kate Bosworth and Thomas Jane, set for release on April 8th. He will also portray Wes Firth in the adventure comedy-drama Burn Your Maps, starring alongside Vera Farmiga and Marton Csokas. Tremblay will also appear in the drama film The Book of Henry, directed by Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) and he is also set to guest star as the younger version of the main character (Will Forte) on Fox's post-apocalyptic comedy series The Last Man on Earth.

I spoke with the absolutely delightful young actor during the Toronto International Film Festival prior to the film's theatrical release. Even though I was unfortunately off with my prediction of him being nominated for an Oscar ( HE WAS ROBBED but he DID win A Critic's Choice Award ) we discussed what it was like to work on the film and how his friends feel about his new-found fame.  Enjoy!
