Everybody Knows - Penelope Cruz interview

Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem in, Everybody Knows

Oscar winning actress Penelope Cruz reunites with her real life husband Javier Bardem on the big screen in the new thriler, Everybody Knows. The movies is written and directed by Iranian Director Asghar Farhadi who Cruz calls on the most brilliant people she has ever worked with.

In Everybody Knows, Cruz plays a woman whose teenage daughter abruptly disappears under mysterious circumstances during a wedding celebration. She spends most of the film in a state of panic and desperation, enlisting the help of an old flame played by her real-life husband, Javier Bardem.

Cruz went to some very dark places to play Laura but says with Ashghar at the helm she know she would be safe. The Iranian director whose last three films include two Oscar winners in the Best Foreign Language Film category: 2011’s “A Separation” and 2015’s “The Salesman,” both studies of families stretched to the breaking point by secrets and class and societal tensions.

Cruz and hubby Bardem have worked on many films together but insists that they really do try to spread out the timing. The couple have two children (Leo, eight, and Luna, five) and each have won an Academy Award, the only Spanish-born actors to have done so. Despite their relaxed, family-oriented life in Madrid and trying to keep their private life as discreet as possible, they are more like Spanish royalty.

I spoke with Penelope Cruz via satellite from Spain about working on such an intense movie, her admiration for her director , working alongside her husband and not bringing her work home.
